Last updated on October 23rd, 2019 at 06:53 am

Looking for a comprehensive maternity insurance solution in 2019?

The NTUC Maternity 360 and GE Flexi Maternity are comprehensive maternity insurance plans for pregnant mothers-to-be. These plans cover pregnancy complications and congenital conditions on baby.

Why buy maternity insurance in the first place?

Because my wife is a doctor, I’ve probably heard a little more horror stories.

There is risk in your delivery process and pregnancy complications do occur.

These conditions are

  • Pre-term delivery
  • Pre-eclampsia
  • Emergency C-section
  • Baby needing phototherapy
  • Baby hole in heart

So Josh why compare between NTUC maternity 360 and GE Flexi Maternity?

There are certainly other maternity plans offered in the market.

You can check on those by AVIVA, AXA and PRU.

But some of these plans are tied together with an investment linked plan (ILP).

If you do not know the issues with an ILP, [read blog post here….]

Hence, I’ll be helping you compare between these 2 mentioned plans.

4 reasons why NTUC Maternity360 covers more!

1. You get more Pregnancy Complications coverage

Want a better peace of mind?

NTUC Maternity 360 covers a total of 10 pregnancy complication conditions (2 new items).

From medical sources, the additional coverage of Ectopic pregnancy will be useful. It occurs to about 1% of all pregnancies and can be detected early. There is two more benefits are not found in the GE Flexi Maternity plan.

  • Choriocarcinoma and malignant hydatidiform mole (NEW)
  • Ectopic pregnancy (NEW)
2. You get more congenitial conditions for you child

Want more peace of mind?

This is currently the widest coverage of all insurers for congenital illnesses with 23 types of congenital illnesses.

There are five more items covered vs the GE Flexi Maternity Plan. Pre-term babies have a higher risk to conditions such as Patent ductus arteriosus (PDA) that can have significant physiological effects.

  • Biliary atresia (NEW)
  • Congenital blindness (NEW)
  • Congenital hypertrophic pyloric stenosis (NEW)
  • Patent ductus arteriosus (NEW)
  • Trancheo-esophageal fistula or esophageal atresia (NEW)
3. You get phototherapy coverage for your child

Jaundice is common with Asian babies, period!

Severe Jaundice may require phototherapy. Ask your Gynae on severe jaundice with newborns.

I seen a few cases myself.

Coverage is for 10 days payable at 1% of sum assured per day if you need to rent the equipment

4. You get more conditions for hospital care benefits

Tears are more common in women having their first vaginal birth.

That is why episiotomy is recommended.

If there is a fourth-degree perineal tear, the plan has a coverage for it.

For caesarian section, there is a wound on the mother and this brings risk such as a surgical site infection. The plan has a coverage for it.

This is in addition to pregnancy complication coverage. Under the GE Flexi Maternity plan, the daily hospital care benefit must be due to a pregnancy complication instead.

GE Flexi Maternity plan pays more for hospital care benefit for your child

The conditions covered are identical and listed below.

The GE Flexi Maternity Plan pays a slightly daily Hospital Care benefit.

Hospital care benefit for child
  • Bronchitis (including other lower respiratory tract infection)
  • Dengue haemorrhagic fever
  • Hand, foot and mouth disease
  • Incubation immediately after birth for more than 3 consecutive days
  • Phototherapy or blood transfusion for severe neonatal jaundice
  • Pneumonia
  • Premature birth

A friend of mine delivered preterm. Her baby had to be in NICU for 3 weeks and the bills became very large.

If your child is admitted to Neonatal ward level 1 (AKA general neonatal care ward), is it covered?

Answer: Not covered. It must be neonatal ward level 2/3

GE Flexi Maternity plan gives a guaranteed option to purchase life insurance

It does not mean the GE Flexi Maternity plan does not mean pre-existing conditions are covered.

For the NTUC Income Maternity 360, there is an option that allows you to purchase life insurance coverage for your baby after delivery but with a simplified application.

From the way the policy wordings,“After the birth of the insured child, the insured mother may choose to take up a new policy offered by us under this benefit, for the insured child based on a simplified health declaration.

It means in severe situations, life policy may not be offered to newborm.

What about less severe situations? It’s not easy to explain.

I’ve done this declaration before and I’ll guide you on it when required.
