Insurance For Heart Murmur And Holes In Heart

Last updated on December 26th, 2018 at 11:45 pm

A close buddy of mine just had a newborn recently. I helped him with the health insurance application and was informed that his baby had holes in the heart. Being a dad myself, I understand the worries he has. If your baby has similar conditions, this post is for you.

How Often Does Hole In The Heart Occur?

According to KKH, it is estimated to be about 8 per 1,000 live births or 0.8%. From my understanding, many holes in the heart don’t need treatment. For those that require treatment, about 25% of infants, it is repaired during infancy or early childhood.

What to do for medical insurance (AKA IP plan) in general?

I’ve seen situations where a newborn’s application was deferred or declined by an insurer under a full underwriting application. In the example below, the application was deferred (i.e. not accepted now). In such a situation, it is likely that ALL insurers doing full underwriting will have the same decline outcome.

While I cannot speak for all insurer’s underwriting team and different condition severity may have different outcome, IMO an application for hole(s) in heart MAY see the case being deferred or declined. Oddly, we cannot do a preliminary underwriting wight the insurer too. Hence, it is really too risky to try an application with full underwriting.

Conclusion: Buy the AVIVA Myshield with Moratorium underwriting (Read post below)

Please read the T&C for such an application. If you fulfil it, you can cover for ALL other conditions beyond heart related for your baby. That is still very useful because infants and toddlers really do go hospitals quite often. To you as a parent, your financial risk is greatly reduced.

With an the AVIVA Myshield cover, you can avoid relying only on medishield life coverage (mainly for only B2 and C wards). It is likely you want more than a basic coverage and the best possible treatment and comfort you can get.

**Please note that as of Jan2019, AVIVA Moratorium no longer available for purchase.**

What about innocent heart murmur?

Heart murmurs can be present at birth (congenital) or develop later in life. A heart murmur isn’t a disease — but murmurs may indicate an underlying heart problem.

For an innocent heart murmur, I’ve also recommended on AVIVA moratorium underwriting in general. However, I’ve colleagues who claim that they have gotten full underwriting applications through. I do not have details on the exact circumstance.

What to do for life insurance application for baby?

Hearing from other parents with a kid having innocent heart murmur, their application was deferred. Hence IMO, a life insurance application for hole(s) in heart is even less likely to be accepted.

What you can do is to wait for good ECG results perhaps age2 before looking for a life insurance plan for baby.
